KARACHI: Mild tremors were felt in parts of Karachi on Friday afternoon, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The earthquake was recorded at 3:39 pm (PST), with a magnitude of 2.2 on the Richter scale and a depth of 10 kilometers, the PMD said in its report.

The department added that the epicenter was located 24 kilometers north of Karachi’s Defense Housing Authority (DHA) area, at coordinates latitude 24.90°N and longitude 67.62°E.

No damage or casualties were reported from any part of the city following the minor tremors.

The port city experienced its second earthquake this month, following a previous tremor felt on October 1.

According to the Met Office, an earthquake of 3.2 magnitude had struck Karachi’s Malir neighborhood at 9:34 am, with its epicenter around seven kilometers northwest of Malir at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Earthquakes have frequently rattled the region, especially Pakistan and Afghanistan, in recent years. Record shows seismic activity in neighboring countries lying at the intersection of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Several parts of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, Chitral, Murree, and adjoining areas, also felt the tremors in the recent months, with reports of effects being felt as far away as Lahore.

At least 57 tremors were recorded in Karachi in June this year. Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari explained that these tremors had occurred due to the reactivation of the Landhi Fault Line after several decades, adding that the fault was going through a normalization phase.
